The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a couple of scam warnings for West Michigan. Specifically, one is for government impersonators, and the other is for romance scammers. This warning is based on this criminal activitiy already happening here.
Some are asking for information that should be closely held and never revealed to anyone over the phone. Things like social security numbers and bank account data.
The scams include websites selling fake products, fake cures, and fabricated emails, texts and social media posts used to steal money and personal information.
The MSP Marshall Post says Friday that the attempted ruse began when an elderly woman from Branch County was contacted by someone claiming to be her grandson.
According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, the victim contacted the Notawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Friday and said he had been contacted by someone claiming to be a federal agent.
