A Battle Creek teenager could be facing charges after he was caught with his father’s gun.

The Battle Creek Enquirer says that police conducted a traffic stop on a car in the first block of S. 20th St. just before 6pm Sunday, because the car failed to stop at a red light and had been speeding. When the officers approached the vehicle, they noticed the smell of marijuana, and they did find some in the pocket of the 16-year-old driver; an 18-year-old was also in the passenger seat.

The vehicle was searched, and a handgun was found; the younger teen told police that he had taken the gun from his father, as he had been robbed a few days before and was looking for the culprit. Authorities spoke to the father, who said he had been purchasing the gun from a friend and keeping it in a closet.

The 16-year-old was referred to the Calhoun County Juvenile Court for his alleged actions.
