ROXAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State Police say an Eaton County sheriff's sergeant shot and killed a 17-year-old in a struggle after a traffic stop near Lansing.

State police Detective Sergeant Jeremy Brewer says the shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. Saturday on Michigan 43 in Roxand Township, about 12 miles west of Lansing.

Brewer says in a statement that the sheriff's sergeant conducted a traffic stop and "a struggle ensued" between him and the teenage driver.

Brewer says that "during the struggle, the sheriff's sergeant sustained significant injuries and fired his weapon." He was taken to Lansing's Sparrow Hospital.

The statement doesn't identify the sheriff's sergeant, who is on administrative while state police investigate.
