Tigers’ Ace Fulmer Could Have Tommy John Surgery
Just when Tiger fans had a glimmer of hope that a rebuilding team could maybe contend in a weak division....BAM! A punch in the gut. Right-hander Michael Fulmer is likely to have Tommy John surgery.
The 26 year old Fulmer was taking it slow this spring, after off season knee surgery. Sure, his velocity was down to the low 90's from his usual mid 90's, but everyone was hopeful that he just needed time to build up arm strength. Now, it appears he'll need a lot more and probably won't pitch again for some time.
The Tigers twitter account (see above) gave this account:
“Following a recent bullpen session… Fulmer began to experience right elbow soreness,” said the statement released by the Tigers. “Based on the results of an MRI, and after receiving a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews, Tommy John Surgery has been recommended in order to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament."
With Fulmer out of action, here's a look at the Tigers' starting rotation:
- Matthew Boyd
- Matt Moore
- Tyson Ross
- Ryan Zimmerman
- Daniel Norris, Spencer Turnbull
