Watch: Hurricane Hunters Fly Directly Into the Eye of Hurricane Matthew
Hurricane Matthew is currently wreaking havoc along the East Coast, a category 3 storm with swirling winds of well over 100 mph. You may have seen certain images that show the so-called "eye of the hurricane" -- the curiously calm middle of the storm that, well, kind of looks like an eye:
But you've never seen it quite like this.
From the cockpit of a of a Lockheed WP-3D Orion, we see as the pilots -- the Hurricane Hunters at the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) -- fly directly through the high-intensity winds of the storm collecting data. Then they emerge into what looks like the total opposite of what we just saw: an oddly calm, strangely still scene of clouds and even some sunshine that makes it seem like you just teleported somewhere else.
