West Michigan Man Arrested For Sexually Abusing Child
A man from Allegan County has been arrested after state authorities say he sexually abused a child and possessed child sexually abusive material.
The Michigan State Police's Computer Crimes Unit, Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force says Monday that 28-year-old Matthew Bennett of Wayland has been arrested on charges of child sexually abusive activity, child sexually abusive material possession, using computers to commit a crime, and being a habitual offender. According to the Michigan Sex Offender Registry, Bennett was arrested on June 4.
The Sex Offender Registry shows that Bennett was convicted of Assault with Intent to Commit Criminal Sexual Penetration in August 2009.
The Michigan State Police say that their investigation began when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children forwarded a tip to the MSP's Fifth District Computer Crimes Unit; with that tip, they say they learned Bennett was a sex offender in possession of child sexually abusive material.
The MSP Computer Crimes Unit recommends that parents speak to their children about using the internet safely. Resources can be found on the NCMEC website.
