Tigers

The Detroit Tigers held on to beat the A's 5-4 yesterday to earn a split of a four-game series with Oakland. Rick Porcello got the win to go to 8-2.  He gave up two runs on five hits while walking six and striking out four, and gave up a home run to light-hitting Nick Punto. Ian Kinsler tied it up in the next inning.  Miguel Cabrera had two RBI and Victor Martinez went two-for-four at the plate and drove in two runs.  Joe Nathan survived a three hit ninth to secure his 13th save of the season. Nathan gave up 2 runs on three hits and a walk in the 9th.  Tigers outfielder Rajai Davis didn’t play Thursday because of a sore left shoulder, bruised in Wednesday’s game as he made a diving catch in the outfield.  He’s day-to-day.  Torii Hunter was given the day off for rest yesterday.   The Tigers head to Seattle for the first of three tonight.     Broadcast time is 9:45 on WBCK-FM.  Justin Verlander will pitch for the Tigers.

Bombers

The Bombers lose their home opener 5-1 to the Kalamazoo Growlers.  A 4-run 4th inning off starter Tanner Tully was the difference in the game.   The Bombers head to Kalamazoo tonight.  It’ll be the first-ever home game for the new franchise.

NBA Playoffs

The Spurs beat the Thunder in Game Five of the Western Conference Finals, 117-89.  Tim Duncan leading the way with 22 points and 12 rebounds, with Danny Green  with a handful of three-pointers...

San Antonio leads the best-of-seven series 3-2 and can close it out in Oklahoma City on Saturday.  The Heat still lead the series 3-2 and will try to avoid going back to Indiana by winning Game Six Friday in Miami.   The NBA is fining a pair of Indiana Pacers for flopping. Guard Lance Stephenson has been tagged with a 10-thousand-dollar fine, while center Roy Hibbert was hit with a five-thousand-dollar penalty. It's the second time this series that Stephenson has been fined.

NHL Playoffs

The New York Rangers are headed for the Stanley Cup finals, for the first time in 20 years.  They beat Montreal last night at Madison Square Garden in Game Six, 1-0.  Dominic Moore scored the only goal late in the second period.  Henrik Lundqvist made 18 saves for his team-record tying ninth career postseason shutout.  The Blackhawks and the Kings play game six tonight in LA, where the Kings can clinch.

Softball

Harper Creek will open district play on Saturday at Jackson Northwest. Pennfield advances to play at Parma Western.

Girls’ Soccer

Parma Western 1, Harper Creek 0.  The Beavers’ season comes to an end.

Marshall 8,  Hanover-Horton 0… two goals apiece from freshmen Carlee Long and Samantha Onkka.  The Redhawks will advance to Saturday’s noon title game against Jackson Lumen Christi.

Gull Lake 6, Wayland Union 0.  Kirsten Taylor had three goals.

Detroit Grand Prix

Detroit becomes the motorsports city this weekend as the Chevrolet Detroit Bell Isle Grand Prix makes its return to the island park. Today is Free Prix Day and visitors to Belle Isle will be able to watch several events including IndyCar Series practice and qualifying, TUDOR SportsCar Championship practice and Pirelli World Challenge Series practice. Qualifications will continue tomorrow leading up to the Indy Dual in Detroit on Sunday afternoon.

Nascar

This Sunday the NASCAR Sprint Cup goes to the Monster Mile, Dover International Speedway, for the Fedex 400 benefiting Autism Speaks.

Clippers Sale Possible

Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer may be in line to be the new owner of the Los Angeles Clippers.  The "LA Times" reports he has won a bidding war to acquire the franchise with a record-setting bid of two-billion-dollars. Embattled owner Donald Sterling gave wife Shelly power to sell the team after he was given a lifetime ban by the NBA after recorded racist comments he made against African-Americans went public last month. A sale of the team to Ballmer would need approval from the league's other 29 teams. The NBA's Board of Governors is scheduled to meet Tuesday.

Golf

The Lakeview High boys’ golf team is headed to State to defend its state championship.  The Spartans finished second on Thursday at an MHSAA Division 1 regional at Eldorado Golf Course in Mason, five strokes behind Rockford.   Freshman James Staab had the best round for Lakeview with a 73.

PGA

Rory McIlroy fired a 9-under 63 on Thursday to race into the early lead of the Memorial Tournament.
