A recently controversial sculpture in downtown Kalamazoo was found vandalized Friday morning. It comes a day after celebrating the history of the harvest between pilgrims and Native Americans.

Kalamazoo Public Safety officers were called to Bronson Park after city crews planning on cleaning the Fountain of the Pioneers found an axe lodged into a part of the statue and fake blood spilling down.

Authorities are investigating the case as vandalism. The axe was either taken as evidence or destroyed.

Around 9am Friday morning, the Southwest Michigan chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America posted a picture on their Twitter account. The chapter is not identified through the National registered chapters.

The fountain has come under recent scrutiny as the statues depict a Native American and a settler face-to-face.
