2014 FIFA World Cup: Portugal Draws With U.S. On Late Goal
Silvestre Varela scored on the last kick of the ball in the 95th minute, and Portugal tied the United States, 2-2, in the teams' second match of 2014 FIFA World Cup play at Manaus, Brazil on Sunday.
The Americans seemed destined for victory after Clint Dempsey scored a go-ahead goal off his stomach in the 81st minute, but Cristiano Ronaldo set up the game-tying tally in the fifth minute of stoppage time to even the score.
Portugal took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Nani in the fifth minute, but Jermaine Jones incredible kick in the 64th minute tied the match and set up the dramatic finish.
A victory over Portugal would have clinched a round-of-16 spot for the Americans. The U.S. team's next match is scheduled for Thursday against Germany, which drew with Ghana on Saturday. Team USA can advance to the knockout round with a win.
