Battle Creek’s Vice Mayor to Resign July 15th
The Battle Creek City Commission will have one seat to fill after the resignation of their Vice Mayor.
Ward 5 commissioner and current Vice Mayor Dave Walters has filed for his resignation that will be effective on Sunday, July 15th. Mayor Mark Behnke received the notice Friday morning from the five-term commissioner, who cited professional and private matters in his letter.
Walters was appointed by the commission in September 2010 to replace former At-Large commissioner Ryan Hersha and re-elected in November 2011. He was elected Ward 5 commissioner in 2015. The retired Battle Creek Police and US Air Force veteran served as Mayor from 2013-2014 and from 2015-2017. He was voted by the commission to become Vice Mayor in November.
The Battle Creek City Commission will discuss the details on the vacated seat in their upcoming meeting Tuesday, July 17th at City Hall. Behnke stated that the seat will need to be filled before their August 14th meeting, which will be 30 days following Walters official resignation.
