Jurnis Allen knows what it's like to live in a box in a back alley, his life controlled by drug addiction, and with no hope of a better life.  But that was his life 18 years ago.   Allen found recovery through the Haven of Rest, and now he's helping other find the path of recovery.   He was a guest on the 95.3 WBCK Morning Show with Tim Collins.   Allen ended up working with Haven of Rest for 8 years.   He said that in his addiction, he started to think he was a better person but was wearing shame like a badge.   When he went to the Haven of Rest, he realized that he could laugh again and saw the possibility for a better life.  He says the key to recovery is that you have to have a made-up mind and a committed heart.  He says what stops a lot of people is "the work we have to do" to recover.   He says he points out that most people spend a lot of effort and creativity staying addicted and he challenges them to "flip the script".

You're invited to join the voices for recovery in the "One Mile Recovery Walk" on Septembr 8th, at 11am.   Registration starts at 10am at the First Congregational Church in Battle Creek.  Lunch will be provided.  There will be plenty of kids' and family activities, including balloon animals, face painting, cotton candy, slushies and more.  It's all free!

RSVP by August 31st to get a t-shirt and lunch.  Call 269-966-7580 or email drsmith@calhouncountymi.gov
