Lions

The Lions beat the Packers 19-7 at Ford Field.  The story of the game was the Lions’ defense, as they held Green Bay Quarterback Aaron Rodgers to just 162 yards, the lowest total for him in 6 years. James Starks and Eddie Lacy combined for just 74 yards on the ground. Don Carey returned a fumble 40 yards for a score.  Reggie Bush ran for 61 yards and a touchdown. The Lions withstood three turnovers from Matthew Stafford.  Stafford had 246 yards passing and two interceptions while also losing a fumble. The Lions travel to take on the New York Jets on Sunday.

"Monday Night Football" the Bears travel to MetLife Stadium to take on the Jets in a battle of 1-and-1 teams.

Tigers 

The Tigers lost to the Royals 5-2 in Kansas City, but took two out of three.   Ian Kinsler homered for Detroit to account for half of their runs. Rick Porcello gave up four runs on 9 hits in three-and-a-third innings for the loss.  The Tigers’ lead the Royals by a game and a half in the Central Division.   The Athletics and Royals are the leaders for the two wild-card spots, and the Mariners are a game and a half out of playoff contention.   The Tigers have seven games left, all at home.   Kyle Lobstein pitches for the Tigers tonight against the White Sox.   Broadcast time is 6:40 on WBCK.   Detroit will also play four against the Twins this week, while KC is on the road against the Indians and White Sox this week.

The Tigers’ Anibal Sanchez threw about 50 pitches in a simulated game yesterday and could be activated this week. The right-hander went on the disabled list last month with a strained right chest muscle.

Stanton Leads Arizona to Win

Quarterback Drew Stanton threw two touchdowns and had no interceptions as Arizona beat San Francisco 23-14 to go 3-0. The former Lion and Spartan made is second straight start for eh injured Carson Palmer.

Former NFL Kicker Dead at 36

Former NFL kicker Rob Bironas is dead at the age of 36.  Nashville police say Bironas died in a single-car accident near his home on Saturday night. Bironas spent nine seasons with the Tennessee Titans but was released in March. He was one of three kickers to work out for the Detroit Lions just last week.  He was also married to Terry Bradshaw's daughter, Rachel.

Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings start the pre-season tonight against the Penguins in Pittsburgh. They skate against the Blackhawks in Chicago on Tuesday.  The regular season begins October 9th, after the 9-game exhibition season.

NASCAR

Joey Logano fought through 15 cautions to win the second race of the Chase at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.  Logano advances to the second phase of the Chase automatically.  Kyle Larson was second, followed by Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray and Jimmie Johnson.

Golf

Paul Goydos picked up his first Champions Tour victory at the Hawaii Championship, finishing one shot ahead of Fred Funk and Scott Dunlap.

Derek Fathauer won the season-ending Web.com Tour Championship on Sunday with a one-stroke victory over Zac Blair.

College Football

Michigan State is two spots higher in this week's top-25 coach’s poll. The Spartans went from 11th to ninth after pasting Eastern Michigan 73-14 on Saturday. The Spartans host Wyoming this Saturday.

U-of-M hosts Minnesota this Saturday.
