Lions

The Detroit Lions opened the 2014 campaign with a 35-14 win over the New York Giants on "Monday Night Football" at Ford Field last night. Quarterback Matthew Stafford was 22 of 32 in passing for 346 yards and two touchdowns, and he rushed for a third score.   Calvin Johnson ended the night with seven receptions for 164 yards and caught two first quarter touchdowns. The defense allowed 197 total yards and forced two turnovers with interceptions by DeAndre Levy and Glover Quinn.  Detroit (1-0) is on the road Sunday against the Carolina Panthers (1-0).

NFL

Rookie John Brown took a screen pass 13 yards for a his first career touchdown with just over two minutes left to lift the Cardinals to an 18-17 win over the Chargers in Phoenix.

Tigers 

The Tigers beat Kansas City 9-5 Monday.  Torii Hunter had two of his three hits in a six-run third inning.  Justin Verlander (13-12) allowed four runs and six hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out four for Detroit.  Nick Castellanos had two hits with two runs scored and two RBIs for the Tigers. Victor Martinez had three hits three hits and an RBI, and Hunter scored twice and drove in a run. Lorenzo Cain hit an inside-the-park home run for Kansas City in the seventh inning, as Torii Hunter and Donnie Kelley collided trying to flag down his long drive to right-center.

The Tigers are a half-game behind Seattle in the wild card race, and two behind Kansas City in the Central Division.  The Tigers host the Royals today. Rice Cut from Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens have terminated the contract of running back Ray Rice following the release of video footage that showed him punching his now-wife in an Atlantic City casino elevator during the offseason. In addition, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced that Rice's previous two-game suspension will now run indefinitely due to the new information that has been made available.  TMZ.com released video of the actual incident on Monday that showed Rice throwing a left-handed punch at then-fiancée Jenay Palmer and knocking her out cold at the Revel Casino back in February.

Croatia's Marin Cilic has won his first grand slam singles title after beating Japan's Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 at the US Open.

FIBA World Cup

Team USA is 6-0 in basketball’s World Cup.   They play again tonight against Slovenia in a quarterfinal game.  The Americans already destroyed Slovenia 101-71 in a World Cup tune-up last month.  The semifinals take place Thursday and Friday, with the bronze medal game on Saturday and the gold medal game on Sunday

NFL Drug Vote

The NFL Players Association is set to vote on a new drug policy. ESPN reports the 32 player representatives will vote Tuesday on a radically revised drug policy following negotiations with the league in New York.  The proposed policy will include human growth hormone testing, significant changes that raise limits for marijuana tests and expanding neutral arbitration.

Soria Near Return

Tiger’s reliever Joakim Soria is a step closer to returning to the bullpen after throwing a simulated game yesterday.  Soria, who has been dealing with an oblique strain for the last month, could be activated from the disabled list tomorrow as long as he doesn't feel any discomfort. Tigers' manager Brad Ausmus said all signs were pointing in the right direction for Soria's return.

Lakeview, Gull Lake won at the SMAC East Jamboree at Loy Norrix, beating second place Lakeview by 11 strokes. Lakeview’s Julia Ryan shot a 40 for the best score of the day.   Cindy Martell led the Blue Devils with a 41.

College Football

Michigan is home to host the Miami Red Hawks this Saturday.  MSU has a bye week and host Eastern Michigan a week from Saturday.
