It might be awhile until a double-homicide suspect makes his way back to Michigan to be tried.

In a hearing in Clear Creek County, Colorado Monday, 24-year-old Alex Perez made clear that he will be fighting extradition to Michigan, and wanted to hire a private attorney.

Perez has been charged with the murders of 27-year-old Renee Mitchell and 67-year-old John Mitchell on January 14 in Coloma.  Authorities say that Perez killed the two in their home, then kidnapped his two children by Renee Mitchell and fled the state.

Perez and the two girls were found January 15 in Colorado, over 1000 miles away from the scene of the crime.  The girls were unharmed and remain in the custody of the Colorado Department of Human Services.

Perez’s next court appearance is February 22.
