Tigers Get Bullpen Help

The Tigers have traded two pitching prospects for Texas Rangers reliever Joakim Soria.  The Tigers send Jake Thompson and Cory Knebel to Texasfor Soria.  The two are considered in the Tigers top five prospects list.  Manager Brad Ausmus says Soria won’t be the closer, but will be Joe Nathan’s setup man.  Joba Chamberlain will take over 7th inning duties, as the Tigers ERA for that inning is 5.15. The 30 year old Soria is 1-3 with a 2.70 ERA and 17 saves in 19 chances.

Tigers

The Tigers beat the Diamondbacks 11-5 in a slugfest in Arizona.  Detroitroughed up Trevor Cahill going up 7-0 after four innings.  Austin Jackson had his 10th multi-hit game in the last 12 to raise his average to .270.  Alex Avila knocked in three runs, and Miguel Cabrera went 2 for 4 with a homer and knocked in three. Anibal Sanchez started and got his sixth win for the Tigers, but gave up 5 runs on 11 hits in just over 6 innings of work.  Joba Chamberlain got the Tigers out of that sixth inning and Blaine Hardy finished up forDetroit. Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez sat out yesterday's win over the Diamondbacks with an upper quad injury. Martinez felt the injury as he was running to first base after hitting a single in the eighth inning of Tuesday's game.  Manager Brad Ausmus says he doesn't believe the issue will keep the outfielder out of the lineup for long, and thought it was best to give him the day off yesterday. The Tigers lead the division now by 6 ½ games.  The Tigers head toAnaheim to play the Angels tonight in the first of four.   Max Scherzer gets the start.  Broadcast time is 9:40 tonight on WBCK.

Merchants Sweep Hurricanes         

The BC Merchants beat the Hurricanes 7-2 and 4-3.  City league playoffs start next week.

Maybin Suspended

Former Tiger and current San Diego Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin has been suspended for 25 games after testing positive for an amphetamine.  The former West Michigan Whitecaps star and top prospect was part of the trade that brought Miguel Cabrera toDetroitin 2007.  He is batting .247 in 62 games this season.

Colon Misses Perfect Game

41-year-old Bartolo Colon came within seven outs of a perfect game as he retired the first 20 batters in the Mets' game atSeattle. Robinson Cano broke up the perfect game with a base hit to left. Colonand the Mets won the game 3-2.

Bombers

The Bombers get back in regular action tonight inRochesterMinnesotaagainst the Honkers.

The Bombers will be home Saturday to host the Woodchucks.

 

Kallgren Wins City Senior Championship

Chris Kallgren won the 22nd annual City Senior Golf Championship.  The 54 year old Hallgren tied formerOlivetHigh Schoolathletic directorTom Sowles for low score during regulation at par-144, then defeated Sowles on the first playoff hole for the win at Binder.

Detroit Lions’ veterans will join the rookies in trainingcampSundayand the first full practice at camp will take place on Monday.Detroitopens preseason play against the Cleveland Browns on August 9th at Ford Field.

MAC Poll Picks BG

Coyotes on the Road

The Battle Creek Coyotes Football team will be on the road again next week against the Miami County (IN) Blitz inDenver,Indiana. They will return home on Saturday, August 2, as they welcome the Toledo Raiders toAthensHigh School. The Coyotes' game day beneficiary will be Chrissy Castellanos, a local woman who is battling cancer. Proceeds from the gate, donation jars, and 50/50 raffle will go help Chrissy in her fight against cancer.
