Tigers 

The Tigers blew a 5-0 lead, and end up losing their longest game in 30 years---a 19 –inning 6-5 loss. David Price got into some trouble in the 7th and got no help from reliever Phil Coke, who gave up two hits with men on base.   Joba Chamberlain coughed up the tying run in the 9th.  Rick Porcello was the eighth Tiger pitcher, and his error in the 19th opened the door for the Jay’s win.  The Tigers lead in the Central Division is just a half-game, after the Royals swept the Giants for their 7th straight win.   The Tigers had a 7 game lead just two weeks ago. The Tigers head toPittsburghfor a two-game interleague series starting tonight.  Justin Verlander gets the start.  Broadcast time is 6:40, weather permitting in Pittsburgh, on WBCK.

Tiger Injuries

The Detroit Tigers have placed right-handers Joakim Soria and Anibal Sanchez on the 15-day disabled list. Sanchez has a strained pectoral muscle and could be out for a month.  Lefty Robbie Ray is expected to be called up to start in place of Sanchez.  Soria has a strained muscle in his left side.   The Tigers will be calling up at least one reliever, and possibly two for tonight’s game inPittsburgh.   Reports say it will be veteran minor leaguer Kevin Whelan, who has been lights-out as the Mud Hens’ closer this season.

Bombers  

The Battle Creek Bombers lost season finale inKenosha, 8-2.   The Bombers finish the second half of the season at 16-21, tied for 6th in the South Division with the Kalamazoo Growlers.

NASCAR at Watkins Glen

AJ Allmendinger picked up his first Sprint Cup victory at Watkins Glen, making his one-car team for JTG Daugherty Racing eligible for the Chase for the Sprint Cup title. Tony Stewart withdrew before the start of the race, hours after killing a dirt track racer during a race in upstateNew York. The three-time champion struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr., who had climbed from his car and was on the darkened dirt track trying to confront Stewart during a race. Ward had crashed following contact with Stewart one lap earlier and got out of his car as it was stopped along the fence. Video of the incident showed Ward walking from his crashed car onto the racing surface as cars circled by, and, as he gestured at Stewart's passing car, he was struck.  Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero says they’re investigating, but don’t have any reason to bring any charges at this time.

 Golf 

Rory McIlroy was won the PGA Championship, marking his fourth major.  Mcilroy edged out Phil Mickelson by just one shot, in a dramatic finish that saw Mickelson showing considerable good sportsmanship, allowing McIlroy to play up with him on the final hole, to make the most of waning daylight.

LPGA

Mirim Lee won the Meijer LPGA Classic on Sunday for her first LPGA Tour victory. Lee beat fellow South Korean playerInbeePark with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff, at Blythefield Country Club, inGrand Rapids.

 Coyotes Lose Season Finale

The Battle Creek Coyotes finished the regular season with a loss to the Michiana Thunderhawks, 20-16.  Battle Creekled 16-6 at the half, but couldn’t score in the second half.  The 7-3 Coyotes take a week off to get ready for the playoffs.

Tennis

Noah Rubin won the USTA Boys' 18s National Championship inKalamazooyesterday to earn a main draw wild card into the U.S. Open.  Rubin also earned a wild card into the U.S. Open doubles main draw Saturday when he teamed with Stefan Kozlov to win the Boys' 18s title.

Agnieszka Radwanska beat Venus Williams 6-4, 6-2 to win the Rogers Cup title women's tournament inMontreal.   Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Roger Federer in the men’s title match inToronto.

Little League World Series

Mo'Ne Davis led her team into the Little League World Series, throwing a three-hitter Sunday, as the 13 year old girl struck out six in the six-inning game.

Lions 
The Lions won their preseason opener against the Browns at Ford Field, 13-12.

The Lions head to the west coast to play the Oakland Raiders this Friday night.

NCAA to Challenge Ruling

The NCAA will appeal Friday’s ruling that opens the door for college athletes to receive some of the money they help generate in major sports. NCAA President Mark Emmert says that college sports' largest governing body found a lot in the decision that was "admirable" but some parts they disagreed with so strongly that they could not let it go unchallenged in court.
