Top 20 Popular Dog Names in Calhoun County

If you guessed "Max", you'd be right in Kalamazoo County.

But the most popular dog names in Calhoun county are "Sadie" and "Daisy."

I asked Calhoun County Treasurer Christine Schauer if they had records on the subject, since they sell dog licenses. The next day, she and her staff had the info for us.

In addition to Sadie and Daisy, Buddy, Molly and Bella round out the top five most popular licensed dog names in Calhoun County during 2014. The name Max also made the Calhoun County list at number six. And, except for Sadie, all of these same dog names were top five in Kalamazoo County, too. So, in this instance, things are not so different in Calhoun County than in Kalamazoo County!

There were some unique names too, including Zreko, Rojo, Twinkletoes, Mowgli and Snickelfritz.

“Getting a license for your dog is not only important in case he or she gets lost, but also to help keep our communities safe as the fees help to fund County Animal Control activities,” said Calhoun County Treasurer Christine Schauer, who, under Michigan law, is responsible for issuing dog licenses in Calhoun County. A license tells everyone that your pet is not a homeless stray. Licensing helps with the recovery of lost or stray animals and helps protect the public from rabies, since licensed dogs must have proof of vaccination. Under Michigan law, all dogs must be licensed and have a license tag on their collars while in public, yet the Calhoun County Treasurer’s office estimates that less than half of the dogs in Calhoun County were licensed. In addition to compiling a list of top 20 dog names in Calhoun County, Schauer’s office also compiled a list of the more creative names. “It’s fun to see some of the interesting names that people give to their dogs,” Schauer said.

Dogs must be licensed at four months of age. If you adopt a dog you have 30 days to get the dog licensed. The last day to purchase a license without penalty is March 1. Between December 1^st and March 1^st most area vets and township/city offices are selling tags. You can buy your dog license online or come into the Calhoun County Treasurer’s Office located in the County Administrative Building at 315 W. Green Street in Marshall or in Battle Creek at our office in the Justice Center Mondays and Fridays. Another alternative is to mail in your information year-round.

So what are the Top dog names in the U.S.? The American Kennel Club says they are Max, Buddy, Charlie, Jack and Cooper for the boys, and Bella, Lucy, Daisy, Molly and Lola for the girls.
