As if travel on Battle Creek's Columbia Avenue wasn't tough enough with construction, crews will be working at the intersection of  Helmer Road and Columbia Avenue starting this afternoon. (Monday August 12th).

A release from the City Traffic Division says it's part of the MDOT’s signal upgrade project.  Crews will be installing underground vehicle detectors at the intersection just northwest of the Meijer Store on Columbia Avenue.  They say vehicle detectors will help traffic flow more efficiently.

Work is expected to take place daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.   The work is expected to be complete by Friday, August 16, at 3 pm, weather permitting.  During this work, the road will remain open with periodic lane closures in all directions.

City workers remind you to please obey all work zone signs and be alert for lane closures, for the safety of our workers, and fellow drivers.

The work coincides with a large construction project on Columbia, between Riverside Drive and Capital Avenue, affecting that intersection starting today as well.

The City says they appreciate everyone’s patience during this and all work in Battle Creek.
