There are some things that adults and parents believe that children are required to do and while I agree with most of the things they say, they aren't required to do most of those tasks. Things like listening to all adults, cleaning their bedroom and other chores, playing sports, minding their business, etc. come to mind first but none of those things are required by the state.

Outside of the physical care and safety of the child or children, the local, state, and federal governments have very little if anything at all to say about parenting style. As long as you are not hurting your children, placing them in harm's way, or appearing to be in a position where you can't care for them properly, the government lets you make your own parenting decisions. Almost every facet of your child's life is in your hands as a parent, except for this one requirement that the government will punish you for neglecting the responsibility.

There is only one requirement that the government asks Michigan parents to uphold or there will be consequences, and it's the attendance policy. No, this doesn't mean that parents need to show up to work every day, but it does mean that their kids need to be given education and instruction every day to maintain their development.

Michigan State law says that

"The law in Michigan governing compulsory attendance requires a parent, legal guardian, or other person having control or charge of a child age six to sixteen to send the child to school during the entire school year, except under the limited circumstances specified in subsection (3) of section 380.1561"

This does not mean that parents cannot choose to homeschool their children but they are required to let the superintendent of the district know. They are also required to receive information on the regulations for home instruction while also noticing the district on what their home instruction plan/curriculum looks like.

Parents, all this is saying is to make sure your kids are going to school so they can become helpful individuals in our society. Whether you choose to homeschool or send them to an institution, the important part is that they have structure while receiving education.
