It's been a testament to determination for a group that has been trying to bring in a new rock climbing gym to downtown Battle Creek. A hearing in front of the City Commission could be the last step.

The Battle Creek City Commission will meet for the final time in 2019 on Tuesday, December 17th with a public hearing discussing the potential new addition to the downtown landscape. The site at 50 West Michigan has been home to several businesses, including J.C. Penney and more recently Cereal City Office Supply.

The owners of the building, Cereal City Athletics, will be in front of the Commission and hear public comments discussing the redevelopment of the 60-year-old building as a Brownfield development. The hearing is to potentially approve just over $540,000 in reimbursement for the estimated $4 million project.

The CCA was given an extension by the Calhoun County Land Bank in 2017 to secure funding for the project, followed by extensions in 2018 to negotiate taxes with the Land Bank due to the building being in a Obsolete Property Rehabilitation district.

The meeting at City Hall is scheduled for 7pm.

A virtual tour of the facility was posted on the Cereal City Athletics' Facebook page in 2016.
