Researchers at the University of Michigan are putting anti-ice coating in a spray-on bottle. They say the new spray shows great promise on airplanes, wind turbines, oil rigs and car windshields. Researcher Anish Tuteja says the new coating is made of a blend of common synthetic rubbers, and is a departure from earlier coatings. Along with being a cheaper, easier alternative to chemical melting agents, Tuteja says other benefits of the product could include more efficient freezers, which currently rely on complex, energy-hungry defrosting systems.
