The 27th Annual Bill Russell Memorial Blues Jam and Chili Cook-Off is happening Saturday the 26th at 6pm at the First Methodist Church in Marshall.

Twenty-seven years ago, Bill, Dee and Bill Russell, Jr., came up with the idea to start a blues jam and chili cook-off benefiting Life Recovery Programs at The Haven of Rest in Battle Creek, which provides individuals with the support and skills so that they can have healthier, more productive lives.

Alicia Barry, Fund Development Coordinator said that The Haven of Rest, which is a Christian organization, is so much more than just an emergency shelter for the homeless in the community. "It's full of programs catered to individual needs to help people get on their feet," said Barry. "We are not just trying to keep them off the street. We are a gateway to new beginnings for our Veterans, families and homeless populations.”

Winter tends to be the toughest months for shelters. Presently, the Haven of Rest is over capacity, leaving some families struggling with the cold.

Daniel Jones, Executive Director of the Haven stated, “We never turn anyone away from a place to stay warm. Our greatest need in the winter months are the financial resources to ensure our homeless families have shelter, clothing, and food. Utility bills are what hurt us the most during the winter months. What better way to help our commitment to our mission than over a bowl of chili and some great entertainment!”

This FREE event kicks off at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 27 at Marshall United Methodist Church located at 721 Old US 27 North (exit 110 off I-94) in Marshall. Chili must be donated by 5:30 p.m. for entry into the contest. There is also a special category and award for “everything else”.
