WMU Increases Tuition, Bumps Up Financial Aid
The Western Michigan University Board of Trustees approved the increase of tuition for the upcoming school year.
The board approved the tuition increase during their regular meeting June 27th. Tuition fees beginning July 1st will be $490 more, and increase of 3.88 percent for the 2018-2019 school year. The State of Michigan asked their universities to increase resident undergraduate tuition by no more than 3.8 percent or $490, whichever is greater.
Western’s board also approved the addition of $3.6 million to the financial aid budget to help alleviate the increase. The financial aid budget increase was 6.4 percent.
State of Michigan residents that are incoming freshmen and sophomores will pay $12,483 in tuition and required fees for the school year.
Other increases include an 8.44 percent increase for state resident graduate students, bumping their cost to $651.57 per credit hour. Resident undergraduates that will be taking less than 12 credit hours will also pay an 8.44 percent increased rate. Western stated that this is in alignment with the state's other research universities. Non-resident graduate students will see an increase of 1.9 percent to $1,232.05 per credit hour.
