A house cat was the difference in getting a Grand Rapids family out of their burning house Thursday morning.

Let's be clear, cats are still aloof animals that really don't care about you. At least some of them. They do, however, care about getting fed. And if the person who feeds them is in danger, well, a cat has to do what it has to do.

Especially when there's no working smoke detectors in the house.

The cat, who remains anonymous and refuses to talk to the press. But authorities say it alerted the people who take care of it, who were then able to get out of the house at 700 Coit Avenue NE early Thursday morning.

For his efforts, I hope the cat at least got a treat.
