The Lakeview Spartans had a chance for the Portage sweep as they hosted the Portage Central Mustangs Thursday. It would be another close battle at Spartan Memorial Stadium.

In the back-and-forth battle, the Mustangs would prevail, scoring with 4:25 left in the fourth quarter and converting a two-point conversion to knock off the Spartans, 28-21.

The Spartans (1-1) received all three touchdowns from senior running back Dre Kemp, who rushed for two scores and caught a 27-yard pass from senior Skylar Nichols to pull them ahead in the fourth. Kemp would finished with 122 yards on 21 carries on the night. The Spartans defense held the Mustangs high-octane rushing offense to 115 yards on the night.

Senior quarterback Austin Laurencig threw for 165 yards and three touchdowns on 10-of-15 passing for the Mustangs (2-0). Austin McCullough caught two passes for 79 yards, including a 47-yard score in the third.

The Spartans are on the road for the first time next week, but will travel across town to see the Battle Creek Central Bearcats, who fell to Benton Harbor Thursday 14-9 (our Game of the Week on WBCK next Friday).
