Kalamazoo County IDs Approved By Commission Wednesday
Kalamazoo County has now approved a measure that will allow for those without state or federal identification to obtain a county ID card instead.
MLive reports that at their meeting Wednesday night, the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners approved the measure, which was first introduced over the winter, by a vote of 6-5 on party lines. The program will cost around $60,000 for the first year, and is set to go into effect in January 2018.
Around 27,000 residents of Kalamazoo County don’t have photo ID, and supporters of this program say it will help those residents do things like fill prescriptions and pay utilities. Those who are opposed say the program isn’t the duty of a county government.
