Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell has been thrust into the national spotlight over the last week and a half, with the news of the spree shooting in his city on February 20. He has responded to media inquiries from all over the country after the shootings in which six people perished, including four from Battle Creek.

"We are not immune," Hopewell said Monday on The Richard Piet Show, adding that both he and Kalamazoo Public Safety Chief Jeff Hadley said as much, publicly, in the weeks leading up to the events.

Hopewell, first elected mayor of Kalamazoo in 2003, talked about how he learned of the events on February 20. He also believes he was nearby when the alleged shooter was arrested.
