Late Inning Magic Not Enough
The Detroit Tigers were looking to bounce back, after losing the last three games, but the Chicago White Sox just weren’t cooperating. It took a while for Michael Fulmer to find his groove on Saturday. The White Sox scored one in each of the first three innings. From there, Fulmer would shut down the Sox, allowing no hits in the 4th, 5th and 6th. Offense from the Tigers looked much the same. Tiger hitters would add a run in the 1st, but would go scoreless then, until the 6th, when Mahtook would score on an Upton single.
The Sox would tack on another run in the 8th, with Abreru’s second homerun of the day: this time with Tiger reliever Blaine Hardy on the mound. The Tigers trailed 4-2. After going 1-2-3 in the 8th, Victor Martinez would make this game interesting in the bottom of the 9th with a lead-off homerun to right, swinging on the first pitch. Three batters later, Alex Avila would tie the game 4-4, with a single to right. That good feeling would come to an abrupt end in the 10th, with the White Sox’s own, lead-off home-run. The Sox would score two and hold on for the 6-4 win
The final line for Michael Fulmer was 4 hits, through 6 innings of pitching, allowing 3 runs with 3 runs and 3 strikeouts. After an explosive offensive outing last week, the Tigers are suddenly missing their starters. Miguel Cabrera, Jacoby Jones and J.D. Martinez remain on the disabled list.
With the loss, the Tigers fall below .500, 11-12. The Tigers look to salvage one from the White Sox, Sunday afternoon. Jordan Zimmerman(2-1, 6.35 ERA) will take the mound for the Tigers. The White Sox will send Miguel Gonzalez(3-0, 2.0 ERA) to the mound. Catch that game on 95.3 WBCK, Sunday afternoon at 12:45 PM.
