Tigers

The Tigers lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 in 14 innings Tuesday night at Comerica Park.  J.D. Martinez sent the game into extra innings with a swing of the bat in the 8th, a two-run homer and his 20th of the season.  Five Tiger relievers held the Pirates at bay, until Tom Gorzelanny gave up a pair of doubles in the 14th. The Tigers had two on and one out in the bottom of the 14th but Victor Martinez hit into a double play to end it. Starter Justin Verlander gave up three runs, two earned, while walking five and striking out three in six innings of work and left with the Pirates up 3-1. Alfredo Simon will start for the Tigers tonight.  Broadcast time is at 6:40 p.m.

Women’s Soccer

Team USA has advanced to the Final at the Women's World Cup with a 2-0 win over Germany in the semifinals in Montreal.  Carli Lloyd opened the scoring on a penalty kick. Kelley O'Hara scored the other goal. The Americans have allowed only one goal through six matches in the tournament. The U.S. will next face either Japan or England, who will square off in the other semifinal Wednesday night.  The championship match will take place in Vancouver on Sunday.

Bombers

The Bombers started the second half of the season with an 11-7 loss to the Rochester Honkers in Minnesota.  The Honkers scored 6 runs in the second and never looked back. Andrew Mitchell only lasted an inning and a third, and Lane Bruner then walked 7 in two innings of relief.   The Bombers stay in Rochester for another game tonight.

Red Wing Moves

The Red Wings have cut ties with forward Stephen Weiss, buying out the remainder of the five-year contract he signed in 2013. In two years with Detroit, Weiss played very little and had 11 goals.  The Wings have re-signed defenseman Brendan Smith to a two-year deal, ahead of the beginning of today's free agency period. The 26-year-old was drafted by Detroit in 2007 and has spent parts of the last four seasons with Detroit.

Pistons-Free Agents

Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy says his first free-agent call today will be to guard Reggie Jackson, who played part of last season for the Pistons.  He also said there were two other players he will reach out to as the team tries to pick up another small forward.  The Pistons are also looking to sign two backup centers during free agency. It appears that Detroit will be without free agent forward Greg Monroe next season.

NBA Jersey Sales

The NBA's Most Valuable Player is also the league's top jersey seller. Golden State Warriors sharp shooter Stephen Curry tops the list in jersey sales, followed by LeBron James of the Cavaliers, Bulls point guard Derrick Rose and Cleveland point guard Kyrie Irving. Former Spartan Draymond Green came in at number-15.

The Tigers have played 76 games, and they’re just 2 over .500.   They’re still 6 games behind first place Kansas City, in third place in the Central division, with just 5 games to go in the first half of the season.  The Royals have the second best record in baseball and will probably represent about half of the All-Star team this season.  In the wild card picture, the Tigers are well out of it, with 6 teams ahead of them.
