I will first preface this piece with stating that I do not condone children above the age of eight pointing their finger in the shape of a gun at anyone.  With that said here we go.

The Kansas City Star is reporting about a 12 year old girl who is in quite a bit of trouble.   A person familiar with a report taken by police said that:

during a class discussion, another student asked the girl, if she could kill five people in the class, who would they be? In response, the girl allegedly pointed her finger pistol — like the ones many children use playing cops and robbers.

So what happened to the 12 year old girl, while of course the police arrested her, the handcuffs were slapped on her and she was hauled out of school in front of all,her classmates. She was later charged with a felony for threatening.

According to Johnson County District Court documents, on Sept. 18, the girl:

unlawfully and feloniously communicated a threat to commit violence, with the intent to place another, in fear, or with the intent to cause the evacuation, lock down or disruption in regular, ongoing activities …

Really, does she have a record where these actions appear to be increasing.  If not could they not have had a discussion with her and if needed punish her in some other manner than having her arrested and perp walked out of the school.

Her grandfather said:

I think that this is something that probably could have been handled in the principal’s office and got completely out of hand...She was just mouthing off

The Kansas Star reported the following:

  • In 2015, a Colorado first-grader was suspended from school after forming his fingers into the shape of a gun, pointing toward a classmate and saying, “You’re dead.” School officials there said they have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to threats.
  • A year earlier, in Columbus, Ohio, a 10-year-old boy was suspended for three days for pretending his finger was a gun. He reportedly pointed it at another student’s head.

I understand we need to take these actions serious in this day and age but arresting them and perp walking them out of school seems a bit much.  This coming from a school culture that are concerned about the school to prison pipeline and restorative justice.
