Old Log Homestead Found Abandoned in the Upper Peninsula Woods

I couldn't even begin to guess how many abandoned, deserted, and empty homes and structures there are in the Upper Peninsula. Some are easy to find, some still undiscovered, some hidden within a clump of trees or bushes, or down a thin dirt road. With the rich mining & logging history that engulfs the entire UP, it's not too difficult to fathom there could be thousands and thousands of these buildings.

One such structure is an abandoned house that was purchased in 2021. It had been listed as “an old house in poor condition” in area records back in 1972. If it was in that bad shape over fifty years ago, imagine what it's like now after weathering a half decade-plus of harsh winter weather...

On first look, it may seem like just another old miner or logger house from 100 or more years ago...but after removing some of the plaster, it was discovered that the house was originally built as a log cabin or home. The logs must have been covered up by the plaster many, many years ago...maybe in the early 1900s. It very well may have been an old miner or logger house from the late 1800s.

As I mentioned, this ramshackle house is privately owned and plans to renovate are being considered by the owner. The front porch is just about completely unfixable and there is consideration by the owner to completely remove the second floor and turn it into a one-floor log cabin home.

It is believed to be an original UP homestead – just one of an infinite number of these places that can be found by just about anyone who explores the Upper Peninsula.
