Beach Erosion & Flooding Threat On Lake Michigan’s Shoreline
Along with daytime temperatures extremely colder than normal, heavy winds and rain are creating a very dangerous situation all along the Lake Michigan shoreline on the west coast of the state.
The National Weather Service has issued a Lakeshore Flood Advisory until 8:00 pm Thursday evening for the potential of flooding and beach erosion along the shore. This includes the beaches from St. Joseph to Manistee, North Beach in South Haven, Holland State Park, Muskegon State Park, Mears State Park in Pentwater and Stearns Park in Ludington.
Northwest winds gusting to 40 mph and waves from 5 to 10 feet are expected to cause hazardous and dangerous conditions along the shore. Port towns along river channel edges could have flooding from water forced into the channels. Due to the threat of beach erosion, residents living on or near the shore should take action to protect their properties.
Not that this probably needs to be said with air temps only in the 50s, but swimming or venturing near the water, such as piers, at Lake Michigan is also strongly discouraged during this weather event.
