Sports: Bellevue wins; Seasons end for other boys’ teams
Boys Basketball Regional Semifinals
Class A -- East Lansing beat Battle Creek Central 74-50 at Gull Lake.
Battle Creek Central ends the year at 19-4. Jahmiel Wade led the way for the Bearcats with 11 points. East Lansing stays undefeated at 24-0 and will face Kalamazoo Central in the regional final on Wednesday.
Class B- Benton Harbor beat Harper Creek 58-44 last night at Allegan. The Beavers end the season at 15-9. Leading Harper Creek was Dom Gibson with 14.
Portland 55, Olivet 52 at Ionia. Olivet finishes at 17-6.
Class C- Muskegon Heights Academy 66, Galesburg-Augusta 29 at Belding.
Class D- Bellevue 64, Marcellus 49. Wyatt Waterbury had 23. Bellevue, 23-1, moves on to face Benton Harbor Dream Academy in Wednesday's regional final.
Dream Academy 61, Marshall Academy 50. Kemar deJesus had 18. The Griffons end the season at 19-4.
Girls Basketball – Regional Quartfinal game Tuesday at Otsego
Last year’s Class B Girls basketball champs are three wins away from another title, but have a very tough game tonight. 22-2 Marshall plays 24-1Grand Rapids Catholic tonight in a Reginal Quarterfinal game at Otsego. Marshall lost to Grand Rapids Catholic 42-34 on January 28th. They beat Grand Rapids 41-30 in last year’s State Quarterfinal. Tonight’s winner will play the winner of Detroit Mumford and Detroit Country Day game on Friday at the Breslin Center at 6pm. The state final is Saturday at 6pm.
Tigers
The Tigers tied Washington 3-3 in 10 innings Monday at West Palm Beach. Justin Verlander pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, giving up one hit and a walk and striking out 4. J.D. Martinez homered for a second straight day. Tyler Collins also homered for Detroit. The Tigers take on the Miami Marlins today at Jupiter, Florida. Lefty Matt Boyd gets the start for the Tigers, who are 4-12 this spring.
Pistons
The Pistons head to Cleveland tonight. Detroit is 7th in the Eastern Conference, with a 33-33 record. Cleveland is in first place, at 43-22.
Big Ten
Seven Big Ten teams are in the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Northwestern has made the tournament for the first time ever. Michigan and Michigan State are in, along with Purdue, Maryland, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Michigan takes on Oklahoma State on Friday at 12:15pm in Indianapolis.
Michigan State plays on Friday against Miami. 95.3 WBCK will carry the game starting at 8pm, live from the BOK Center in Tulsa.
Action in the tournament begins today with “First Four” games. The Final Four starts April 1 in Phoenix.
WMU Hockey
WMU’s hockey team heads to the Frozen Faceoff in Minneapolis, taking on University of Minnesota Duluth on Friday.
Red Wings
The Red Wings play in Colorado on Wednesday. Jimmy Howard is expected to start in goal.
