It’s not the Stanley Cup, but Red Wing fans can celebrate a Cup Victory, as the Wings’ top minor league team , the Grand Rapids Griffins has won another AHL Calder Cup.   The Griffins beat the Syracuse Crunch 4-3 last night in game six of in Grand Rapids.  It’s the team’s second Cup win in five seasons.

The Griffins came from behind in the final period, as Tyler Bertuzzi scored his ninth of the playoffs.  It was his 23rd career playoff goal, most in Griffins franchise history.

Martin Frk broke a 3-3 tie with his fifth goal of the playoffs at 12 minutes, 41 seconds of the third period.

Matt Ford and Mitch Callaghan also scored for the Griffins.

Jared Coreau made 29 saves in goal.

Bombers

Battle Creek lost to Kenosha 4-2 in the first of two games there.   Trent Johnson started and pitched well for the Bombers, giving up single runs in the first and sixth.  The Bombers scored twice in the fourth on an RBI single by Logan Kaletha.

That was all the Bomber hitters could muster, and reliever Taylor Horn was touched up for two runs in the seventh. Game two in Kenosha is tonight, and then the Bombers head home to host the Lakeshore Chinooks on Thursday and Friday. The Madison Mallards come in for games on Saturday and Sunday, before a day off on Monday.

The Bombers are 10-5 on the season, tied with Kenosha in second place behind Wisconsin Rapids.  The Rafters are 13-1.

Tigers

The Tigers lost 7-6 Tuesday night to the Arizona Diamondbacks.  It was a strange and rough outing for Buck Farmer. Farmer gave up two runs on five hits in the 1st. He struck out the side in the second.  In the third, he allowed two home runs, scoring four. The Diamondbacks lead was 6-0, and Chad Bell came on to relieve Farmer and end the inning. Farmer departed and Chad Bell took over, shutting out the D-Backs for the next 3 2/3 innings.   Meanwhile, the Tigers clawed their way back to tie the game with six runs in the sixth to chase starter Zach Greinke.  A couple of miscues by the D-Backs, and a J.D. Martinez two-run homer and a string of singles tied it up at 6-6.  Alex Wilson loaded the bases with no outs in the 8th but got out of it unscathed.  Closer Justin Wilson wasn’t so lucky in the 9th.  But in the 9th, Justin Wilson gave up a solo homer to David Peralta and the Tigers lost 7-6.  The Tigers play the Diamondbacks again tonight.  Jordan Zimmerman takes the mound.  Broadcast time is 6:45 on 95.3 WBCK.

Tigers Draft

The Tigers drafted eight more players on Tuesday, on day 2.   So far the Tigers have drafted five pitchers, two catchers, and three outfielders.  The draft continues today for a final day.

MSU Football Players talk to Reporters

After a rough and negative off-season, MSU football players were made available to the media on Tuesday to tell reporters what they hope to do to improve the program's image. State has dismissed four players after criminal sexual conduct charges were filed against them.

Former Lion GM to MSU

A former front office mainstay with the Lions is now the MSU Football director of player personnel.  Sheldon White worked for 19 years with Lions and was the team's interim GM in 2015.

The Spartans promoted offensive line coach Mark Staten.  He’s now assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator.

Albion Grad to Coach Butler

Albion native LaVall Jordan is the new head basketball coach at Butler.  The 38 year old becomes the 24th coach at his alma mater.  He graduated in 2001.   Jordan will replace Chris Holtmann, who left Friday to succeed Thad Matta at Ohio State.

Stanley Cup Parade Wednesday

The Pittsburgh Penguins' Stanley Cup championship victory parade will be held this morning.  The Penguins are the NHL's first repeat champions since the 1998 Red Wings.
