Sports: Lions lose, Spartans win; High School tonight
The Baltimore Ravens beat the Lions 44-20 on Sunday. Matthew Stafford was 24 of 29 for 292 yards and one interception and threw for one touchdown. Stafford threw a team-record 20 straight pass completions in the second half, but he was sacked three times and the Lions were held to less than 80 yards rushing. Stafford left the game late in the fourth quarter with a bruised hand after being stepped on. Ex-rays were negative. Lions coach Jim Caldwell took responsibility for mistakes that led to the loss, such as the play where they had just nine defenders on the field for a key third-and-7 conversion early in the fourth quarter. The Lions are 6-6 and play at Tampa Bay this Sunday and still have games against the Bears, Bengals and Packers.
The Packers beat Tampa Bay 26-20 in OT.
Minnesota beat Atlanta 14-9.
Seattle beat Philadelphia, 24-10.
Monday night, Pittsburgh is at Cincinnati.
MSU beat Nebraska 86-57 on Sunday at the Breslin Center. The Spartans (7-1) have won six straight since losing to top-ranked Duke, beating each team by at least 18 points. Four Spartans scored in double digits. Nick Ward had 22 and 7 rebounds. Cassius Winston had 16 and 6, Jarrin Jackson Jr. scored 15 with 10 rebounds and Miles Bridges had 12 points and six rebounds. MSU plays at Rutgers on Tuesday night. 6pm on 95.3 WBCK. Coach Tom Izzo’s Show is Wednesday at 7pm.
MSU beat WMU 65-62 at the Breslin Center.
CMU beat Oakland, 103-85.
Minnesota beat EMU 80-56.
Oklahoma and Georgia are headed out west to play their College Football Playoff semifinal in the 104th Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl will be played without a team from either of its traditional Pac-12 or Big Ten conferences for the first time since Jan. 3, 2002.
Clemson and Alabama play in the Sugar Bowl.
The College Football Playoff Committee picked Alabama over Ohio State for the playoff. Both the Pac-12 and Big Ten have no teams among the four semifinalists.
Michigan State (9-3, Big Ten) plays Washington State (9-3, Pac-12), in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 28, 9 p.m. EST
Wisconsin plays Miami in the Orange Bowl on December 30th, after finishing 6th in the playoff rankings.
Michigan plays South Carolina on January 1st in the Outback Bowl.
Notre Dame plays LSU January 1st in the Citrus Bowl.
No. 9 Penn State will face No. 12 Washington in the Fiesta Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium on Dec. 30.
WMU is one of three bowl-eligible teams to miss out on a bowl invite.
The Red Wings host Winnipeg on Tuesday night in Detroit, as they try to bounce back from a 10-1 loss on Saturday in Montreal. The Wings have lost 7 straight.
The Pistons play the Spurs tonight at 8:30 in San Antonio. Detroit is 14-8 and fourth in the Eastern Conference following a loss to the 76ers on Saturday.
Tiger Woods finished 8-under and tied for 9th at the Hero World Challenge at Nassau. It was his first match in 10 months, following his fourth back surgery. Rickie Fowler won it by four strokes over Charley Hoffman.
