The Colorado Avalanche beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 on Wednesday night.  The defeat ended Detroit's nine-game point streak against the Avalanche.  Both Detroit and their once-hated rival are well out of the playoff hunt.  Andreas Athanasiou scored for the Red Wings.  Jimmy Howard made 26 saves in his second start since returning from a knee injury that had kept him out since Dec. 20.  J.T. Compher scored his first NHL goal.  Matt Duchene scored his first goal in 12 games and Carl Soderberg added his first in 18 games for the NHL-worst Avalanche.  The Wings are in Arizona tonight.

Pistons

The Pistons lost to Utah 97-83 on Wednesday.  Utah won for the sixth time in seven games as Detroit fell short in a late rally. Ish Smith led Detroit with 16.   Aaron Baynes and Tobias Harris each had 12. Gordon Hayward led the Hawks with 25 and 9 rebounds.  Detroit is tied with Miami for 8th place in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons host the Toronto Raptors on Friday night. Phoenix comes in for a game on Sunday afternoon.

Boys Basketball Regional

Class D- Bellevue lost to Benton Harbor Dream Academy 61-49 in Wednesday's regional final.   Bellevue, with only one loss in the regular season, ends the year at 23-2.

Class A -- Kalamazoo Central beat East Lansing 75-60 in the regional final.   Kalamazoo plays Grand Rapids Christian Tuesday in a state quarterfinal game.

WMU Hockey
WMU’s 8th-ranked hockey team is in Minneapolis for the NCHC postseason tournament with top-ranked Denver, No. 3 Minnesota-Duluth and No. 11 North Dakota. The Broncos take on Minnesota-Duluth in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Friday.

Girls Basketball

The Marshall Redhawks face second-ranked Detroit Country Day (24-1) on Friday at 6pm at the Breslin Center at Michigan State University. We’ll have the broadcast on Friday night at 6pm on 95.3 WBCK.

The winner plays either Ypsilanti Arbor Prep or Freeland at the state final game Saturday at 6pm.  95.3 WBCK will also broadcast that game.

Women’s College Basketball

The Michigan women's basketball team will play in the WNIT for the fourth straight season. The Wolverines host Kent State in the first round of the WNIT tonight at 7pm.

CMU plays Wright State in Dayton.

KCC Softball

KCC’s softball team won twice in Titusville, Florida.   They beat Spoon River 12-4 behind pitcher Alexa Stephenson, and beat 13th-ranked Iowa Central 9-5.   Sarah Gwinn went 3 for 4 with a home run and Jessica Roan had two hits including a home run.

NCAA Tournament

Michigan and Michigan State have their first NCAA Tournament games on Friday.  Michigan takes on Oklahoma State at 12:15pm in Indianapolis.

The Spartans play Miami in Tulsa. The Spartan Sports Network will have a live show from Tulsa, on Thursday night, from 7 to 8 with Coach Tom Izzo, MSU Players, Miami's head coach and their players. Kansas will also be on the program. The show will help preview Friday's game between MSU and Miami.

95.3 WBCK will carry the MSU/Miami game starting at 8pm, live from the BOK Center in Tulsa.  The winner will likely face Kansas, the top-seeded team in the Midwest Region, on Sunday.

Tigers

The Tigers beat Atlanta 8-6 in Lakeland.   Jordan Zimmerman started and gave up 4 runs in just two-thirds of an inning.   Anibal Sanchez pitched 4 perfect innings, striking out 5, after working with Manager Brad Ausmus and the coaches on his pitching delivery.   Nick Castellanos had two hits and is hitting .308 this spring.  Andrew Romine hit a two-run homer and centerfielder Mikie Mahtook went two for two with a triple, as the Tigers hammered starter R.A. Dickey for six runs.  The Tigers take on the Braves again today, this time at Disney.

Lions

The Detroit Lions have re-signed long snapper Don Muhlbach.   Muhlbach is entering his 14th season, all with Detroit. He ranks fourth on the Lions' list with 196 games played and needs five more to pass linebacker Wayne Walker for third place.
