Sports: Red Wings Officially Out of Playoffs; Pistons next?
The Red Wings lost 4-1 in Carolina and officially are out of the playoffs for the first time in a quarter-century. It was the longest active playoff run in any major sport, and the third longest streak in NHL history. Wings’ forward Tomas Nosek had his first NHL goal. Detroit is at Tampa Bay on Thursday. They’re home to play the Leafs on Saturday.
Pistons
The Pistons continue to fade from the playoff picture, after a 97-96 loss to the Miami Heat. Hassan Whiteside tipped in a shot over Andre Drummond at the buzzer for the win. The Pistons had come back from a 12-point deficit, taking a four-point lead with 30 seconds to go. Stanley Johnson committed five fourth-quarter turnovers. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had 25 points and Tobias Harris and Ish Smith each scored 19 for the Pistons, who are now 7 games below .500 for the season. Detroit has lost five in a row and eight of their last nine. Detroit is now 2 ½ games behind Miami for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls are ahead of the Pistons, just a game behind Miami. The Pistons host the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night. They head to Milwaukee on Friday.
Tigers
Michael Fulmer settled down to beat the Yankees 6-3 last night in Tampa. Fulmer gave up a run in the first, and shut down the Yanks the rest of his 5 innings worked. The Tigers got home runs from Justin Upton and Steven Moya. Minor leaguer Alex Presley had two hits and is hitting .452 as he makes a bid to fill in for injured J. D. Martinez. The bullpen also shut down New York, with the exception of Bruce Rondon, who gave up two runs in the 7th. But manager Brad Ausmus says Rondon will still make the team. Reports also say Anibal Sanchez will stay on the team, but will start the season as the long relief guy in the bullpen. That means Matt Boyd has made the team as a starter, and Mike Pelfrey could be out of a job with the Tigers. Justin Verlander goes to the mound today against the Phillies at Lakeland. It’s the final spring home game.
WNIT
The Michigan women's basketball team will host Villanova at 7pm tonight in the WNIT quarterfinals. The winner plays either Washington State or Georgia Tech in the WNIT final on Saturday at 3.
MSU Loses Cornerback
MSU cornerback Drake Martinez has decided to transfer. Martinez played in two games in 2015 and four games last season for Michigan State.
Silverdome’s Days are Numbered
The Pontiac Silverdome will be torn down after a judge approved a deal to get rid of the stadium. The Detroit Free Press says Triple Investment Group has until June 9 to apply for a permit and announce the date of destruction. The Lions played there for 26 years starting in 1975 and the Pistons played there too. It was the site of the 1982 Super Bowl. The parking lot has been used lately to park VW’s involved in the company’s emissions scandal.
