Andreas Athanasiou scored the game-winner in overtime for the Red Wings....again!  For the second straight night,  Athanasiou had the game winner in the extra period.  This time, he collided with goalie Eddie Lack as the puck went in to give Detroit a 4-3 victory over Carolina.   Lack remained down for several minutes after taking a hit to the head.   He was taken off on a stretcher as both teams surrounded him on the ice.  Lack flashed a thumbs-up sign as he was wheeled away.  He later Tweeted: “Thanks for all thoughts and prayers.  Everything looks alright and I'll be able to go home tonight! Thanks for thinking of me.”  Anthony Mantha scored for the Wings on a breakaway goal.  The Red Wings skate in Carolina again tonight.

Pistons

The New York Knicks beat the Pistons 109-95 victory Monday night in New York.    The Pistons turned the ball over 20 times, and were held scoreless for the first seven minutes of the second half.  Marcus Morris had 20.  Ish Smith had 15 points.  Point guard Reggie Jackson was benched.  Coach Van Gundy says his left knee is still only at 80 percent, and keeping him from making the plays he would like to make.   Derrick Rose scored 27 points for the Knicks who stay in playoff contention, breaking a 5-game skid.  Detroit has lost four in a row.  The Pistons are now 1 ½ games behind Miami for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.   The Pistons are home tonight against the Miami Heat.

Women’s NCAA Tournament

The UConn Huskies are headed to the Women’s final four for the 10th straight year.   UConn beat Oregon 90-52 on Monday night.  The Huskies’ 111th straight win moves Coach Geno Auriemma past Pat Summitt for the most NCAA Tournament wins, with 113.   UConn plays Mississippi State this weekend.  South Carolina beat Florida State 71-64.  South Carolina plays Stanford in the Final Four.

WNIT

The Michigan women's basketball team will host Villanova at 7pm on Wednesday in the WNIT quarterfinals.  Washington State takes on Georgia Tech.  The winners play in the WNIT final on Saturday at 3.

Tigers

The Tigers lost to Atlanta 11-3.  Daniel Norris gave up 9 runs on 13 hits in three innings.   Omar Infante had two hits and is hitting .351 for the spring in his comeback effort.  Nick Castellanos added two more hits.  He’s batting .377.  Detroit sends Michael Fulmer to the mound tonight against the Yankees at Tampa, 6:30 on 95.3 WBCK.

School Classification Moves

The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced classification moves for next year, with 20 state teams moving up, and 25 moving down a class.   One area school stands out on that list.  Harper Creek moves from Class B to Class A, joining Battle Creek Central, Lakeview, Gull Lake and Coldwater.

NFL owners approve Raiders’ move

The Oakland Raiders will be moving to Vegas.   The NFL gave owner Mark Davis the nod on Monday, after efforts to build a new stadium in Oakland stalled, and Las Vegas came up with $750 million in public funds.   The team will play in Oakland next season, and possibly another season, as the new stadium is built.   Las Vegas is also getting an NHL team this fall, the Golden Knights.

NCAA Tournament

The final four is set for next weekend. North Carolina plays Oregon and South Carolina takes on Gonzaga. The games will be played Saturday in Glendale Arizona.
