The Tigers were off Monday, and start a three game series tonight in Detroit against Baltimore.  Matt Boyd starts against the Oriole’s Wade Miley, who is averaging more than 10 strikeouts per 9 innings.   Broadcast time is 6:45 on 95.3 WBCK.  The Tigers are 18-18 on the season and two games off the pace behind Minnesota and Cleveland.   The Twins lead the division.

Tigers top prospect reliever Joe Jimenez will be sidelined for a month, according to vice president of player development Dave Littlefield. Jimenez, on the disabled list with Triple-A Toledo, will rehabilitate a "lower back condition" in Lakeland.

Max Scherzer Hit By Drive; K’s 3 after

Former Tiger Max Scherzer took a wicked shot off his knee in the game with the Phillies on Monday.   He hopped around and rolled on the ground in pain, but stayed in the game.  The next inning, Scherzer struck out the side on 9 pitches, a feat only accomplished 83 times in baseball history.  He left the Tigers two years ago for a 7 year, $210 million dollar contract with the Nationals.

NBA Playoffs

The Boston Celtics beat Washington in game 7, 115-105 and Boston moves on to play Cleveland in the Eastern Conference finals.  Isaiah Thomas finished with 29 points and 12 assists. Boston's bench outscored the Wizards' bench 48-5.  The Wizards still haven't advanced past the second round since the 1979 Finals.  The Celtics get just one day off before hosting the Cavs. Cleveland is well rested following back-to-back four-game sweeps.

Golden State leads San Antonio one game to none in the Western Conference Finals.   Game two is tonight at Golden State.  Spurs coach Gregg Popovich says Kawhi Leonard won't play after aggravating his sprained left ankle during the second half of Sunday's loss to the Warriors.

NHL Playoffs

Pittsburgh beat Ottawa 1-0 in Pittsburgh to tie the series at one. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 23 shots and Phil Kessel scored the only goal late in the third period.

Ottawa will host Game 3 on Wednesday.

Nashville and Anaheim are even at a game each.  Game 3 is tonight in Nashville.

World Hockey

The United States plays Russia this morning at 10:15am in the hockey world championship in Cologne, Germany.   Coach Jeff Blashill has led the USA to five straight wins since an opening-day loss to Germany.  Russia has outscored the opposition, 32-6 and hasn’t given up a goal in three straight games.  Red Wings’ Jimmy Howard will be in goal and has been playing well.  His Red Wing teammate Dylan Larkin has eight points. The Wings’ Danny DeKeyser is also on the team.

KCC Baseball Wednesday

The KCC Bruins baseball team starts play in the National Junior College Tournament on Wednesday, when they take on Macomb Community College.  First pitch is 11:30am at C.O. Brown Stadium.

CMU Hires New A-D

Central Michigan has hired Michael Alford as its new athletic director.  He currently works as the senior associate A-D for administration and development at Oklahoma.  Alford replaces Dave Heeke, who was hired as Arizona's athletic director in April.

Federer Out of French Open

Roger Federer says he won't play in the French Open, saying he’ll prepare to play on grass and hard courts later this season. The Open starts in Paris on May 28.

Women’s Tennis Rankings

Angelique Kerber is back atop the WTA rankings, replacing Serena Williams, who has not played a match since winning the Australian Open in January.  Williams is due to give birth in the fall and is taking the rest of the year off.

Griffins Play in Chicago

The Grand Rapids Griffins play at San Jose on Saturday night in the AHL Western Conference best of seven finals.  Game 2 is Sunday in San Jose, and game 2 is Wednesday May 24th in Grand Rapids.
