Tigers

The Tigers beat Tampa Bay 8-7 in 13 innings last night at Comerica Park.  Rajai Davis homered to give Detroit a 1-0 lead, but the Tigers found themselves down 5-1 in the 6th. Detroit countered with 4 runs in their 6th to tie it up, and J.D. Martinez put them ahead in the 8th with his 36th homer.  But Bruce Rondon failed to get the save in the 9th, as he walked two and gave up a hit. A walk-off sacrifice fly from Rajai Davis scored McCann from third for the win. James McCann went 2 for 5, caught all 13 innings of the 5 hour game, and at one point was hit in the head by a pitch.  The Tigers used 10 pitchers in the game, tying a club record.  Kyle Ryan got the win.  Tonight, Kyle Lobstein takes the hill for Detroit.  Broadcast time is 6:40 on WBCK.

Tigers on the Mend

Pitcher Daniel Norris, who is dealing with a right oblique strain, threw his second bullpen session yesterday while pitcher Anibal Sanchez is set to throw from the bullpen mound today as he recovers from a rotator cuff strain. Both Norris and Sanchez could pitch a simulated game later this week.

Tigers 2016 Schedule Announced

The Tigers will open and close the 2016 season on the road against National League teams. Major League Baseball released the tentative schedule for next year, which has Detroit starting the season in Miami against the Marlins April 12th, and closing out the campaign in Atlanta October 2nd. The Tigers will host the New York Yankees in the home opener April 8th.

College Football

The SEC has landed a record 10 teams in the first Associated Press college football poll of the season, although Ohio State remains a unanimous No. 1.

The Michigan football team went over the film of their loss to Utah last Thursday.

With new coach Jim Harbaugh at the helm, the offense as a whole watched the film together and each player was called out with each mistake they made.  They have their home opener this weekend against Oregon State.

Fifth ranked Michigan State faces number-seven Oregon on Saturday night in the team's home opener.   The matchup, being held under the lights at Spartan Stadium is being called biggest home game in years.  Former Michigan State running back Le'Veon Bell will serve as the team's honorary captain for the game.

WMU travels for Saturday's game at Georgia Southern.

Lions

The Detroit Lions open the regular season on Sunday in San Diego.  

T.J. Jones is listed as Detroit's starter for punt and kickoff returns this weekend against the Chargers.  Jones missed all of last season with a shoulder injury but had a strong preseason and training camp to make the 53-man roster as the fifth receiver.

The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Ricky Stanzi to their practice squad. The move comes after No. 3 quarterback Kellen Moore was cut over the weekend.  Detroit also signed receiver Saalim Hakim to complete the ten-man practice squad. Hakim, brother of former Lions receiver Az-Zahir Hakim, spent the last two seasons with the Jets.

US Open

Serena Williams' quest for a calendar Grand Slam remains intact after she earned a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over her sister, Venus, in the U.S. Open quarterfinals. Next up for Williams is Roberta Vinci.

Volleyball

At Portage Central….10th ranked Harper Creek went 2-1 on the day, beating Plainwell and Portage Central but losing to Mattawan. It was the first loss for the Beavers.  Olivia Leson and Charley Andrews led the Beavers with a combined 56 kills.

Nascar

Saturday's Federated Auto Parts 400 at the Richmond International Raceway is the final regular-season race before the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
