Wisconsin beat WMU 24-16 in the Cotton Bowl on Monday to deny Western an undefeated season.   The Big Ten Badgers set the tone early; with rushing touchdowns on their first two drives to take a 14-0 lead against the Group of Five team. Zach Terrell threw a rare interception late in the game, to set up Wisconsin tight end Troy Fumagalli’s leaping 8-yard touchdown catch with 14 minutes left.  WMU scored in the second half on a great leaping catch by All-American Corey Davis in the end zone.

Ninth-ranked Southern California has won the highest-scoring game in Rose Bowl history by rallying from a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit to beat fifth-ranked Penn State, 52-49. Freshman San Darnold threw for 453 yards and five touchdowns. Matt Boermeeter hit a 46-yard field goal as time expired.

Oklahoma cruised to victory in the Sugar Bowl as Joe Mixon rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns in the seventh-ranked Sooners' 35-13 win over No. 17 Auburn, 35-19 at the Sugar Bowl.  Samaje Perine breaking Oklahoma's school record for career yards rushing, breaking Billy Sims 1979 record.

#20 Florida whipped No. 21 Iowa, 30-3 in the Outback Bowl to finish the year 9-4.

Lions

The Lions fell short of winning the NFC North Division, but did make the playoffs after Washington lost to the New York Giants.  Detroit will play at Seattle in an NFC Wild Card Game on Saturday night.  Broadcast time is 7:15pm on WBCK.

Red Wings

The Red Wings and Maple Leafs played outdoors in the Centennial Classic on Sunday in Toronto, where the game was delayed by sun glare.  The Red Wings gave up four straight goals in the third period to fall behind 4-1.  But they came back to tie it on goals by Erickson, Tatar, and Mantha.  The Wings play Wednesday night in Anaheim and Thursday night in Los Angeles.

Boys Basketball

Pistons

The Pistons host Indiana tonight at the Palace of Auburn Hills, in a battle of two teams with losing records. The Pacers are a game under .500, and are 7th in the Eastern Conference.  The Pistons are 4 under .500 and in 11th place.

Detroit hosts Charlotte on Thursday.

College Basketball

WMU plays at Ohio U tonight and Miami of Ohio tomorrow.

CMU is at EMU.

Michigan hosts Penn State on Wednesday.

MSU Coach Released from Hospital

MSU women’s basketball coach Suzy Merchant has been released from a hospital after fainting while coaching Michigan State against Illinois in a women's basketball game.  Michigan State says the 47-year-old Merchant spent the night at a hospital and underwent tests as a precaution after she fainted during Michigan State's 74-47 win Sunday over the Illini. She was released from the hospital Monday.  The university says a time frame for Merchant's return to coaching hasn't been determined. The school didn't release any additional details. The Spartans are at Purdue on Wednesday.  Merchant is in her 10th season at Michigan State and has a 215-99 record.

Junior Hockey
The US beat Switzerland 3-2 in a quarterfinal match Monday at the world junior hockey championship.  The U.S. will face Russia in a semifinal Wednesday at the Bell Centre in Montreal. The Americans topped the Russians 3-2 in the preliminary round.

NFL Coach Kubiak Resigns

Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak has officially announced he is stepping down because of health concerns, saying the demands of the job are no longer a good fit for him. Kubiak led the Broncos to a Super Bowl 50 victory against Carolina last February and went 24-11 in two seasons with the team. Kubiak missed a week of work in October after suffering a complex migraine, his second health scare in three years.
