At 4:49 a.m. Wednesday morning, a Battle Creek police officer reported a crash on Michigan Avenue near Allene Avenue and west of Bedford Road in the Urbandale neighborhood.

Prior to the crash, an officer that was near the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Hussey Avenue saw the Jeep Cherokee traveling at approximately 100 miles per hour, according to the Battle Creek Enquirer. A short time later the officer said he a saw a flash, headed toward that location and found the SUV had left the roadway on the south side, traveled down a sidewalk and through yards before striking a tree.

Due to the high rate of speed before impact, the SUV shattered into three pieces. Authorities located engine at least 50 yards away from the wreckage.

The driver, identified as 31 year old man from Battle Creek, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not being released pending notification of family.

The incident remains under investigation.
