HS Basketball: Heading Off To Sturgis

All five city teams are on the road tonight and we dip into a historical rivalry between two former conference foes.

Many years ago, the Lakeview Spartans and Sturgis Trojans were together in the Twin Valley Conference. It all started in 1984, when the Spartans joined the conference from the former Southwest Michigan Conference. The Trojans were one of the founding members of the Twin Valley, dating all the way back into the 1940s.

The two teams would continue their battles in the Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference in 2001, seeing each other twice a year in the East Division.

Sturgis would eventually leave the SMAC to join the Wolverine Conference in 2014, and the Trojans have flourished since. After a 13-9 season last year, the Trojans are 4-2 on the season and have won three straight.

The Spartans are looking to find their winning ways at 1-5, and have lost three of their games this season by less than 10 points.

The last time these two teams played each other was in February of 2014 when Sturgis held off Lakeview 49-47 on their home floor, considered one of the toughest places to play in Southwest Michigan. The Spartans also beat Sturgis 50-49 in their previous matchup in Lakeview that year.
