Is Michigan Truly A Midwest State?
Last night during the Democratic Presidential Primary debate Jonathan Weisman, a New York Times Deputy Washington Editor tweeted the following:
Saying @RashidaTlaib (D-Detroit) and @IlhanMN (D-Minneapolis) are from the Midwest is like saying @RepLloydDoggett (D-Austin) is from Texas or @repjohnlewis (D-Atlanta) is from the Deep South. C’mon.
Apparently many people in the Twittersphere interpreted that tweet as his contention that neither Detroit nor Minneapolis are part of the Midwest. His tweet apparently upset too many people and then Mr. Weisman tweeted the following:
Earlier this morning I tried to make a point about regional differences in politics between urban and rural areas. I deleted the tweets because I realize I did not adequately make my point.
Do you believe Michigan is part of the Midwest or should we really be called the Mideast?
According to the U.S. Census Bureau and National Geographic Michigan is in the Midwest as well as the state of Minnesota.
Professor of geography at Michigan State University Joe Darden said:
"There is no confusion over that...I don't know why there is any discussion about it”
So fellow Michiganders should we still be considered part of the Midwest or create a new geographical region and call it the Mideast.
