Alabama has won its 10th Associated Press national championship following its 45-40 victory over Clemson in the title game on Monday night.  Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry ran for 158 yards and three touchdowns.   O.J. Howard had touchdown grabs of 53 and 51 yards while setting an Alabama bowl game record with 208 receiving yards. The Tigers lost despite Deshaun Watson, who completed 30 of his 47 passes for 405 yards and four touchdowns. The Crimson Tide have now won four national titles in the past seven years, all under coach Nick Saban. Stanford, 45-16 winners over Iowa in the Rose Bowl, finished third in the final poll, followed by Ohio State, Oklahoma and Michigan State.

Red Wings

The Kings beat the Red Wings 4-2 last night in LA.  Tomas Tatar and Alexey Marchenko scored late in the first period in the Red Wings' first loss on their six-game road trip.

Detroit will finish the road trip on Thursday at Arizona.   The Red Wings have placed Drew Miller on long-term injured reserve after he tore a meniscus in his knee.  Miller was injured in Detroit's victory over Anaheim on Sunday night. The penalty-killing specialist had returned only two games ago from a broken lower jaw, which had kept him out for 14 games.  The Red Wings activated defenseman Kyle Quincey in Miller's place.

NHL

The Florida Panthers had 12 game win streak snapped with a 3-2 overtime loss in Vancouver last night.

 

College Basketball

Michigan is on its home floor tomorrow night hosting third-ranked Maryland.  The Spartans are off until Thursday when they host Iowa.

Pistons

The Pistons host the Spurs tonight at The Palace. Detroit beat Brooklyn on Saturday for its third straight win.

NBA

The Golden State Warriors are an NBA-best 36-2 after Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson led them to a 111-103 win over Miami.

Lions

New Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn says he has not decided whether to retain or fire coach Jim Caldwell. Quinn was introduced as the Lions' GM on Monday.

His top task is to figure out Caldwell's future with the team. Caldwell has two years left on his four-year contract. He is 18-15 over two years, including a loss in a wild-card game last year.  Quinn worked within the New England Patriots' personnel department for 16 years, including the past four as their director of pro scouting.

NFL

Saturday the Patriots host the Chiefs, and the Packers are at Phoenix.

Sunday, the Seahawks are at Carolina and the Steelers go to Denver.
