Tigers

The Tigers lost 5-1 in Houston. Alfredo Simon went five innings, and gave up 4 runs on 6 hits and walked 4.  Jed Lowrie powered the offense with a two-RBI double.

The Astros tacked on runs in the 6th and 8th. Astros ace Dallas Kuechel struck out eight in seven solid innings to go 14-6 on the season. Miguel Cabrera is off the disabled list and back in the starting lineup.  He went 0-3 with a walk last night.  Cabrera, who was on the DL for the first time in his 13-year career, did not play any rehabilitation games to prepare for his return. Justin Verlander will pitch tonight. The Tigers are five games behind in the race for the second AL wild-card spot.

Calhoun County Amateur

About 120 golfers are competing in this weekend’s 38th annual Calhoun County Amateur Golf Championship at Binder Park Golf Course.

Golf

Jason Day and Matt Jones shared the lead at 9 under before second-round play was suspended by a violent round of thunderstorms at the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.  Both Day and Jones were 5 under in their second rounds. Justin Rose was in third place at 8 under, 5 under for the day through 17 holes. The second round will resume this morning, with the third beginning a half hour after it finishes up.

Coyotes

The Battle Creek Coyotes will travel to play the No. 1 Seed, Michiana Thunderhawks, for the MLFA North Conference's Midwest Division Championship Saturday at 4 p.m.

Nascar

Matt Kenseth has won the pole for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway, and Joe Gibbs Racing swept the top three spots in qualifying Friday. Kenseth won with a lap of 197.488 mph in his No. 20 Toyota, with teammates Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards finishing second and third. Kyle Busch, another JGR driver, was sixth.

Lions

The Detroit Lions practice will be open to the public this afternoon at Allen Park.

The Lions won their pre-season opener, beating the New Jets 23-3 Thursday night at Ford Field. Detroitwill travel toWashingtonfor their second exhibition game next Thursday.

MSU Football

The Spartans open the season on September 4th at WMU, and then host Oregon the following week. The Spartans will hold their first scrimmage of the season today inEast Lansing.
