Sports: Tigers Open the Season Today in Chicago
The Tigers Opening day is this afternoon in Chicago against the White Sox. Justin Verlander will start for Detroit, against Jose Quintana of the White Sox. Broadcast time is 3:45pm. There is a 70% chance of rain in the Chicago forecast. The two teams have an open date scheduled tomorrow, in case rain washes out today’s opener. Day games are scheduled in Chicago for Wednesday and Thursday.
MLB Opening Day
The baseball season got underway on Sunday with a few games.
Tampa Bay beat the Yankees, 7-3.
St. Louis 4, Chicago Cubs 3. Yadier Molina then was given the first no-pitch intentional walk in major league history. That’ a new rule designed to speed up the game.
Arizona 6, San Francisco 5. Giants’ starter Madison Bumgarner hit two home runs, struck out 11 with no walks over 7 inning, but the bullpen blew it in the 9th.
NCAA Basketball
Tonight, Gonzaga and North Carolina play for the National Championship in Glendale Arizona.
NCAA Women’s Tournament
South Carolina beat Mississippi State, 67-55 to win their first NCAA Championship.
WNIT
The Michigan women's basketball team won the WNIT final 89-79 over Georgia Tech in triple overtime. Katelynn Flaherty had 27 points. Michigan ends the season with a program-best 28 wins, a third-place Big Ten regular-season finish and the WNIT title.
Red Wings
The Red Wings have four games left, three at Joe Louis Arena. They host the Ottawa Senators tonight at the Joe, travel to Ottawa tomorrow, and finish the season and their long history at the Joe with games on Saturday and Sunday.
Pistons
The Pistons host the Raptors on Wednesday. With four games left, Detroit is two games of the pace to make the playoffs, behind Miami, Indiana, and Charlotte.
NASCAR
Michigan native Brad Keselowski won the STP 500 at Martinsville. Kyle Busch was second. Chase Elliot was third.
Golf
Russell Henley won the by PGA's Houston Open. Henley was down four shots going into the final day on Sunday and won by three strokes.
