The Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3 in 11 innings on Monday for their 11th win in 14 games.  Miguel Cabrera homered twice and had four hits off Chris Sale.  Cabrera became the fourth player to reach 300 homers with the Tigers with a liner to right in the first. He secured his fifth multi-homer game of the season with a drive to left-center in the third, his 31st of the season. Justin Upton hit a three-run home run in the 11th inning.   Chris Beck issued consecutive two-out walks to Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez before Upton crushed a 1-2 fastball to right for his 21st home run.  It was his second game-winning homer in two days after connecting in the eighth inning Sunday against Kansas City.  Justin Verlander struck out 11 in seven innings as the Tigers stayed tied with Baltimore for the second AL wild card.  But Verlander did not get a win, as his old battery-mate, Alex Avila, tied it with a home run in the 7th.   Alex Wilson (2-0) gave up one hit in the 10th and Francisco Rodriguez gave up a run in the 11th before securing his 39th save. He moved past John Franco for fourth on the career saves list with 425.  The Tigers send Matt Boyd to the mound tonight in Chicago. Broadcast time is 7:45 on WBCK.   The Tigers trail first place Cleveland by 4 ½ games and are tied with Baltimore for the final wild-card spot.

Tigers Roster

Detroit Tigers right-hander Mike Pelfrey has been activated off the disabled list and moved to the bullpen. Pelfrey had been sidelined since July 31st with a lower back strain. The 32-year-old said Monday he is "fine" with the decision.

MLB

Rookie Alex Bregman hit a two-run homer in the third inning and the Houston Astros ended the Cleveland Indians' six-game winning streak with a 6-2 victory Monday night.

The Cubs have won 7 out of 10 and lead St. Louis by 16 ½.  Chicago goes for their 90th win of the season tonight in Milwaukee.

Volleyball

The KCC Volleyball team remains winless, falling to 0-8 following a tournament in Toledo.

NASCAR

Martin Treux Jr. held off Kevin Harvick Sunday to take the checkered flag in the Bojangles Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.  It was Truex's second win of the NASCAR sprint cup series season, and the fourth of his cup career.

Tennis

Top-ranked Serena Williams has advanced to the U.S. Open women's quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph against Yaroslava Shvedova  It was the 308th Grand Slam singles victory for Williams, passing Roger Federer for the most in tennis' Open era. Joining Williams in the quarters are fifth seed Simona Halep and No. 10 Karolina Pliskova, who knocked out Venus Williams in three sets.

Juan Martin del Potro has continued his surprising run at the U.S. Open by reaching the quarterfinals when eighth seed Dominic Thiem had to retire because of a knee injury. At No. 142, del Potro is the lowest-ranked U.S. Open quarterfinalist since Jimmy Connors in 1991. Third seed Stan Wawrinka moved into the quarters, as did Kei Nishikori.
