Battle Creek Fire Department Giving Out Free Smoke Detectors

In response to several fires recently in the Battle Creek area, the Battle Creek Fire Department has launched a new community outreach program. On Monday, the BCFD announced that they will be going door-to-door to give out and install smoke detectors for those who need them.

Their first area of focus will be the North Central neighborhood, in the area between Lafayette Avenue and the Kalamazoo River. Members of the fire department will visit roughly 75 homes with smoke detectors ready to be installed. They also will offer general safety tips and answer any questions residents might have for them.

This focused outreach is in response to the tragic home fire on Hamblin Avenue last week. Fire crews want to install smoke detectors in the neighborhood around this home, and educate the community about the fact that alarms not only save lives, but also reduce property damage, and make fire fighting safer for crews.

This is the first outreach opportunity planned in an ongoing campaign and going forward, the Fire Department plans to hold similar outreach efforts in neighborhoods where a fire has happened.

The installation of smoke detectors is free, and neighbors don't need to provide a thing. BCFD crews are bringing their own tools and ladders for installation. They will install smoke alarms whether you own or rent your home. For those who aren't home at the time, crews will leave a door hanger and you can call back for an appointment, if you need smoke alarms in your home.
