At the Battle Creek City Commission’s meeting Tuesday, an ordinance will be introduced to bring the city’s policy on alcohol possession in line with state law.

According to the Commission’s agenda, the ordinance would make the penalty for a minor’s first offense for possession or consumption of alcohol a civil infraction, down from a misdemeanor. The ordinance also changes some language regarding substance abuse disorders to make things consistent with state law.

The Michigan Legislature passed laws last year decriminalizing minor in possession, and they are set to take effect on October 10.
